Apollonius se Tyrisca

Hēr onginþ sēo gerecednes be Antioche þǣm ungesǣligan cyninge and be Apollonīe þǣm Tyriscan ealdormenn.

On Antiochia þǣre ceastre wæs sum cyning Antiochus gehaten. Æfter þæs cyninges naman wæs sēo ceaster Antiochia gecīeged. Þisses cyninges cwēn wearþ of līfe gewiten. Be þǣre hē hæfde āne swīðe wlitige dohtor ungelīfedlicre fægernesse. Mid þȳ þe hēo becōm tō giftlicre ielde, þā giernde hire manig mǣre mann, micele mǣrðe bēodende.

Þā gelamp hit sārlicum gelimpe. Þā þā se fæder þōhte hwǣm hē hīe meahte hēalicost forgiefan, þā gefēoll his āgen mōd on hire lufe mid unrihtre gewilnunge; tō þǣm swīðe þæt hē forgēat þā fæderlican ārfæstnesse, and gewilnode his āgene dohtor him tō gemæccan. And þā gewilnunge nāht lange ne ielde; ac sume dæge on ǣrmorgene, þā hē of slǣpe āwōc, hē ābræc intō þǣm būre þǣr hēo inne læg, and hēt his hīred-menn ealle him āweg gān, swilce hē wiþ his dohtor sume dīegole sprǣce sprecan wolde. Hwæt hē þā on þǣre mānfullan scylde ābisgode, and þā ongēan-winnendan fæmnan mid micelre strengðe earfoþlīce ofercōm, and þæt gefremede mān gewilnode tō bedīglienne!

Þā gewearþ hit þæt þæs mægdenes fōstormōdor intō þǣm būre ēode, and gesēah hīe þǣr sittan on micelre gedrēfednesse, and hire cwæþ tō, “Hwȳ eart þū hlǣfdige swā gedrēfedes mōdes?”

Þæt mægden hire andswarode, “Lēofe fōstormōdor, nū tōdæg forwurdon twēgen æðele naman on þissum būre.”

Sēo fōstormōdor cwæþ, “Hlǣfdige, be hwǣm cwist þū þæt?”

Hēo hire andwyrde and cwæþ, “Ǣr þǣm dæge mīnra brȳdgifta, ic eom mid mānfulre scylde besmiten.”

Þā cwæþ sēo fōstormōdor, “Hwā wæs æfre swā dyrstiges mōdes þæt dorste cyninges dohtor gewemman ǣr þǣm dæge hire brȳdgifta, and him ne ondrēd þæs cyninges ierre?”

Þæt mægden cwæþ, “Ārlēasnes þā scylde on mē gefremede.”

Sēo fōstormōdor cwæþ, “Hwȳ ne sægst þū hit þīnum fæder?”

Þæt mægden cwæþ, “Hwǣr is se fæder? Sōþlīce on mē earmre is mīnes fæder nama hrēowlīce forworden, and mē nū forþǣm dēaþ þearle gelīcaþ.” Sēo fōstormōdor sōþlīce þā þā hēo gehīerde þæt þæt mægden hire deaðes giernde, þā clipode hēo hīe hire tō mid līðre sprǣce, and bæd þæt hēo fram þǣre gewilnunge hire mōd gewende, and tō hire fæder willan gebūge, þēah þe hēo tōgenēadod wǣre.

On þissum þingum sōþlīce þurhwunode se ārlēasest cyning Antiochus, and mid gehīwodan mōde hine selfne ætīewde his ceastergewarum, swilce hē ārfæst fæder wǣre his dohtor, and betwux his hīwcūðum mannum. Hē blissode on þǣm þæt hē his āgenre dohtor wer wæs; and tō þǣm þæt hē hīe þȳ lengra brucan meahte his dohtor ārlēasan brȳdbeddes, and him fram ādrīfan þā þe hire gierndon tō rihtum gesinscipum, hē āsette þā rædels, þus cweðende, “Swā hwilc mann swā mīnne rædels riht ārǣde, onfō se mīnre dohtor tō wīfe. And se þe hine misrǣde, sīe hē behēafdod.” Hwæt is nū māre ymbe þæt tō sprecenne, būton þæt cyningas ǣghwanon cōmon and ealdormenn, for þǣm ungelīfedlican wlite þæs mægdenes, and þone dēaþ hīe oferhogodon, and þone rædels understōdon tō ārǣdenne. Ac gif heora hwilc þonne þurh āsmeagunge bōclicre snotornesse þone rædels āriht rǣdde, þonne wearþ se tō behēafdunge gelǣd. Swā same swā se þe hine āriht ne rǣdde; and þā hēafdas ealle wurdon gesetted on ufeweardan þǣm geate.

Mid þȳ sōþlīce Antiochus se wælhrēow cyning on þisse wælhrēownesse þurhwunode. Þā wæs Apollonius gehaten, sum geong mann se wæs swīðe welig and snottor, and wæs ealdormann on Tyre þǣre mǣgðe. Se getrūwode on his snotornesse and on þā bōclican lāre, and ongann rowan oþþæt hē becōm tō Antiochian, ēode þā intō þǣm cyninge and cwæþ, “Wel gesunda cyning. Hwæt ic becōm nū tō þē swā swā tō gōdum fæder and ārfæstum. Ic eom sōþlīce of cynelicum cynne cumen; and ic bidde þīnre dohtor mē tō gemæccan.”

Þā þā se cyning þæt gehīerde þæt hē his willes gehīeran nolde, hē swīðe ierlicum andwlitan besēah tō þǣm geongan ealdormenn and cwæþ, “Þū geonga mann, canst þū þone dōm mīnre dohtor gifta?”

Apollonius cwæþ, “Ic cann þone dōm, and ic hine æt þǣm geate gesēah.”

Þā cwæþ se cyning mid ǣbylgnesse, “Gehīer nū þone rædels: Scelere vereor, materna carne vescor.” Þæt is on Englisc, “Scylde ic þolīe, mōddrenum flǣsce ic bruce.” Eft hē cwæþ, “Quero patrem meum, mee matris virum, uxoris mee filiam, nec invenio.” Þæt is on Englisc, “Ic sēce mīnne fæder, mīnre mōdor wer, mīnes wīfes dohtor, and ic ne finde.”

Apollonius þā sōþlīce onfangenum rædelse hine bewende hwōn fram þǣm cyninge. And mid þȳ þe hē smēade ymbe þæt ingehygd, hē hit gewann mid wīsdōme. And mid Godes fultume hē þæt sōþ ārǣdde, bewende hine þā tō þǣm cyninge, and cwæþ, “Þū gōda cyning, þū āsetest rædels; gehīer þū þā onfundennesse ymbe þæt þū cwǣdest. Þæt þū scylde þolodest, ne eart þū lēogende on þǣm; besēo tō þē selfum. And þæt þū cwǣdest, ‘moddrenum flǣsce ic bruce’, ne eart þū on þǣm lēogende; besēo tō þīnre dohtor.”

Mid þȳ þe se cyning gehīerde þæt Apollonius þone rædels swā rihte ārǣdde, þā ondrēd hē þæt hit tō wīdcūþ wǣre, besēah þā mid ierlicum andwlitan tō him and cwæþ, “Þū geonga mann, þū eart feorr fram rihte. Þū dwelast, and nis nāht þæt þū segst. Ac þū hæfst behēafdunge geearnod. Nū lǣte ic þē tō þrītigra daga fæce, þæt þū beþence þonne rædels āriht; and þū siþþan onfō mīnre dohtor tō wīfe. And gif þū þæt ne dēst, þū scealt oncnāwan þone gesettan dōm.” Þā wearþ Apollonius swīðe gedrēfed, and mid his gefērum on scip āstāg, and rēow oþþæt hē becōm tō Tyrum.

Sōþlīce æfter þǣm, þā Apollonius āfaren wæs, Antiochus se cyning him tō gecīegde his dihtnere, se wæs Thaliarcus gehaten. “Thaliarce, ealre mīnra dīegolnessa mīn se getrēowesta þegn, wite þū þæt Apollonius āriht ārǣdde mīnne rædels. Āstīg nū hrædlīce on scip and far æfter him; and þonne þū him tō becume, þonne ācwel þū hine, mid īsene, oþþe mid attre, þæt þū mæge frēodōm onfōn þonne þū ongēan cymst.” Thaliarcus sōna swā hē þæt gehīerde, hē genām mid him gē feoh gē āttor and on scip āstāg and fōr æfter þǣm unsceþþigan Apollonīe, oþþæt hē tō his ēðle becōm. Ac Apollonius þēahhwæðre ǣr becōm tō his āgenan, and intō his hūse ēode, and his bōcciste untȳnde, and āsmēade þone rædels æfter ealra ūþwitena and Chaldea wīsdōme.

Mid þȳ þe hē nāht elles ne onfunde būtan þæt hē ǣr geþōhte, hē cwæþ þā tō him selfum, “Hwǣt dēst þū nū Apolloni? Þæs cyninges rædels þū āsmēadest, and þū his dohtor ne onfēnge. Forþǣm þū eart nū fordēmed þæt þū ācweald wurde.” And hē þā ūt ēode, and hēt his scip mid hwǣte gehlæstan, and mid miclum gewihte goldes and seolfres, and mid manigfealdum and genihtsumum rēafum; and swā mid fēawum þǣm getrēowestum mennum on scip āstāg, on þǣre þriddan tīde þǣre nihte, and slōg ūt on þā sǣ. Þā þȳ æfrtran dæge wæs Apollonius gesōht and geāscod, ac hē ne wæs nāhwǣr funden. Þǣr wearþ þā micel murcnung and ormǣte wōp, swā þæt se hēaf swēgde geond ealle þā ceastre. Sōþlīce swā micele lufe hæfde eall sēo ceasterwaru tō him, þæt hīe lange tīd ēodon ealle unscorene and sīdfeaxe, and heora wǣferlican plegan forleton, and heora bæða belucon.

Þā þā þās þing þus gedōn wǣron on Tyran, þā becōm se foresægd Thaliarcus, se wæs fram Antiochio þǣm cyninge. Hē wæs āsended tō þǣm þæt hē sceolde Apollonium ācwellan. Þā hē gesēah þæt eall þās þing belocen wǣron, þā cwæþ hē tō ānum cnapan, “Swā þū gesund sīe, sæge mē for hwilcum intingum þēos ceaster wunīe on swā miclum hēafe and wōpe.”

Him andswarode se cnapa and þus cwæþ, “Ēalā hū mānful mann þū eart, þū þe wāst þæt þū æfter āscast! Oþþe hwæt is manna þe nite, þæt þēos ceasterwaru on hēafe wunaþ, forþǣm þe Apollonius se ealdormann fǣringa nāhwǣr ne ætīewde, siþþan hē ongēan cōm fram Antiochio þǣm cyninge?”

Þā þā Thaliarcus þæt gehīerde, hē mid miclan gefēan tō scipe gewende, and mid gewīsre seglunge binnon ānum dæge cōm tō Antiochian, and ēode in tō þǣm cyninge, and cwæþ, “Hlāford cyning, glada nū and blissa. Forþǣm þe Apollonius him ondrēd þīnes rīces mægenes, swā þæt hē ne dearr nāhwǣr gewunian.”

Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Flēon hē mæg, ac hē ætflēon ne mæg.” Hē þā Antiochus se cyning gesette þis gebann, þus cweðende, “Swā hwilc mann swā mē Apollonium lifiende gebringeþ, ic him giefe fīftig punda goldes; and þǣm þe mē his hēafod tō gebringeþ, ic giefe him hundtēontig punda goldes.”

Þā þā þis gebann þus geset wæs, þā wǣron mid gītsunge beswicene, nā þæt ān his fīend ac ēac swilce his frīend, and him æfter fōron and hine geond ealle eorðan sōhton, gē on dūnlandum, gē on wudalandum, gē on dīeglum stōwum, ac hē ne wearþ nāhwǣr funden. Þā hēt se cyning scipu gegearcian, and him æfter faran. Ac hit wæs lang ǣr þǣm þe þā scipu gegearcode wǣron; and Apollonius becōm ǣr tō Tharsum. Þā sume dæge ēode hē be strande, þā gesēah hine sum his cūðra manna se wæs Hellanicus genemnod, se þā ǣrest þider cōm. Þā ēode hē tō Apollonium and cwæþ, “Wel gesund hlāford Apolloni!”

Þā forsēah hē Apollonius ceorlisces mannes grētinge, æfter rīcra manna gewunan. Hellanicus hine eft sōna gegrētte and cwæþ, “Wel gesund Apolloni, and ne fōrsēo þū ceorliscne mann þe biþ mid weorþfullum þēawum gefrætwod! Ac gehīer nū fram mē þæt þū selfe nāst: Þē is sōþlīce micel þearf þæt þū þē warnīe, forþǣm þe þū eart fordēmed.”

Þā cwæþ Apollonius, “Hwā meahte mē fordēman, mīnre āgenre þēode ealdormann?”

Hellanicus cwæþ, “Antiochus se cyning.”

Apollonius cwæþ, “For hwilcum intingum hæfþ hē mē fordēmed?”

Hellanicus sægde, “Forþǣm þe þū gierndest þæt þū wǣre þæt se fæder is.”

Apollonius cwæþ, “Miclum ic eom fordēmed.”

Hellanicus sægde, “Swā hwilc mann swā þē lifiende tō him bringþ, onfō se fīftig punda goldes; se þe him bringe þīn hēafod, onfō se hundtēontig punda goldes. Forþǣm ic þē lǣre þæt þū flēo and beorge þīnum līfe.”

Æfter þissum wordum, Hellanicus fram him gewende; and Apollonius hēt hine eft tō him geclipian and cwæþ tō him, “Þæt wierresta þing þū dydest þæt þū mē warnodest. Nim nū hēr æt mē hundtēontig punda goldes, and far tō Antiochio þǣm cyninge, and secge him þæt mē sīe þæt hēafod fram þǣm hneccan ācorfen, and bring þæt word þǣm cyninge tō blisse. Þonne hæfst þū mēde and ēac clǣne handa fram þæs unsceþþigan blōdes.”

Þā cwæþ Hellianicus, “Ne geweorðe þæt hlāford, þæt ic mēde nime æt þē for þisum þingum; forþǣm þe mid gōdum mannum nis naðer ne gold ne seolfor wiþ gōdes mannes frēondscipe wiþmeten.” Hīe tōēodon þā mid þissum wordum. And Apollonius sōna gemette ōðerne cūðne man ongēan hine gān þæs nama wæs Stranguilio gehaten.

“Hlāford geonga Apolloni, hwæt dest þū þus gedrēfedum mōde on þissum lande?”

Apollonius cwæþ, “Ic gehīerde secgan þæt ic wǣre fordēmed.”

Stranguilio cwæþ, “Hwā fordēmde þē?”

Apollonius cwæþ, “Antiochus se cyning.”

Stranguilio cwæþ, “For hwilcum intingum?”

Apollonius sægde, “Forþǣm þe ic bæd his dohtor mē tō gemæccan, be þǣre ic mæg tō sōðe secgan þæt hēo his āgen gemæcca wǣre. Forþǣm gif hit geweorðan mæg, ic wille mē bedīglian on ēowrum ēðle.”

Þā cwæþ Stranguilio, “Hlāford Apolloni, ūre ceaster is þearfende, and ne mæg þīne æðelborennesse ācuman. Forþǣm þe wē þoliaþ þone heardestan hungor and þone rēðestan, and mīnre ceasterwarum nis nān hǣle hyht. Ac se wælhrēowesta stent ætforan ūrum ēagum.”

Þā cwæþ Apollonius, “Mīn se lēofesta frēond Stranguilio, þancas Gode þæt hē mē flīeman hider tō ēowrum gemǣran gelǣdde. Ic selle ēowrum ceasterwarum hundtēontig þūsenda mittan hwǣtes, gif gē mīnne flēam bedīgliaþ.”

Mid þȳ þe Stranguilio þæt gehīerde, hē hine āstreahte tō his fōtum and cwæþ, “Hlāford Apolloni, gif þū þissere hungrige ceasterwaran gehelpest, nā þæt ān þæt wē willaþ þīnne flēam bedīglian, ac ēac swilce þē nēod gebȳreþ. Wē willaþ campian for þīnre hǣle.”

Þā āstāg Apollonius on þæt dōmsetl on þǣre strǣte and cwæþ tō þǣm andweardum ceasterwarum. “Gē Tharsisce ceasterwaran, ic Apollonius se Tyrisca ealdorman ēow cȳðe, þæt ic gelīefe þæt gē willan bēon gemyndige þissere fremfulnesse and mīnne flēam bedīglian. Wite ēac þæt Antiochus se cyning mē āflīemed hæfþ of mīnum earda. Ac for ēowre gesǣlðe gefultumiend gōde, ic eom hider cumen. Ic selle ēow sōþlīce hundtēontig þūsenda mittan hwǣtes, tō þǣm weorðe þe ic hit gebōhte on mīnum lande.”

Þā þā þæt folc þæt gehīerde, hīe wǣron blīðe gewordene, and him georne þancodon, and tōgeflites þone hwǣte up bǣron. Hwæt þā Apollonius forlēt his þone weorþfullan cynedōm and mangeres naman þǣr genām mā þonne giefendes, and þæt weorþ þe hē mid þǣm hwǣte genām hē āgēaf sōna ongēan tō þǣre ceastre bōte. Þæt folc wearþ þā swā fægen his cystignessa and swā þancful, þæt hīe worhton him āne onlīcnesse of āre, þe on þǣre strǣte stōd. And mid þǣre swīðran handa þone hwǣte hlōd and mid þǣm winstran fēt þā mittan træd, and þǣron þus āwriton: ‘Þās gifu sealde sēo ceasterwaru on Tharsum, Apollonio þǣm Tyriscan, forþǣm þe hē þæt folc of hungre ālīesde, and heora ceastre gestaðolode.’

Æfter þissum hit gelamp binnon fēawum mōnðum, þæt Stranguilio and Dionisiade his wīf gelǣrdon Apollonium þæt hē fērde on scipe tō Pentapolim þǣre Ciriniscan byrg, and cwǣdon, þæt hē meahte þǣr bedīglod bēon and þǣr wunian; and þæt folc hine þā mid unāsecgendlicre weorþmynte tō scipe gelǣddon; and Apollonius hīe bæd ealle grētan and on scip āstāg. Mid þȳ þe hīe ongunnon þā rōwan, and hīe forþweard wǣron on heora weg. Þā wearþ þǣre sǣ smyltnesse āwended fǣringa betwux twǣm tīdum, and wearþ micel hrēohnes āweaht, swā þæt sēo sǣ cnysede þā heofonlican tungla, and þæt gewealc þāra ȳða hwoðerode mid windum. Þǣr tōēacen cōmon ēast-norðerne windas, and þæt angrislic sūþwestern wind him ongēan stōd; and þæt scip eall tōbærst on þissere egeslican hrēohnesse. Apollonius gefēran ealle forwurdon tō dēaðe; and Apollonius āna becōm mid sunde tō Pentapolim þǣm Ciriniscan lande, and þǣr ūpēode on þǣm strande. Þā stōd hē nacod on þǣm strande and behēold þā sǣ and cwæþ, “Ēalā þū sǣ Neptune, menna berēafigend and unsceþþigra beswīcend. Þū eart wælhrēowra þonne Antiochus se cyning; for mīnum þingum þū gehēolde þās wælhrēownesse, þæt ic þurh þē geweorðe wǣdla and þearfa, and þæt se wælhrēowa cyning mē þȳ ēaðe fordōn meahte. Hwider mæg ic nū faran? Hwǣs mæg ic biddan, oþþe hwā giefe þǣm uncūðan līfes fultum?”

Mid þȳ þe hē þās þing wæs sprecende tō him selfum, þā fǣringa gesēah hē sumne fiscere gān. Tō þǣm hē besēah and þus sārlīce cwæþ, “Gemiltsa mē þū ealda mann! Sīe þæt þū sīe, gemiltsa mē nacodum, forlidenum! Næs nā of earmlicum byrdum geborenum; and þæs þe þū gearu forewite hwǣm þū gemiltsīe. Ic eom Apollonius se Tyrisca ealdorman.”

Þā sōna swā se fiscere gesēah þæt se geonga mann æt his fōtum læg, hē mid mildheortnesse hine ūpāhōf and lǣdde hine mid him tō his hūse, and þā ēstas him beforan legde þe hē him tō bēodenne hæfde. Þā giet hē wolde be his mihte māran fæstnesse him gecȳðan, tōslāt þā his wǣfels on twā and sealde Apollonīe þone healfan dǣl, þus cweðende, “Nim þæt ic þē tō sellenne habbe and gā intō þǣre ceastre. Wēn is þæt þū gemēte sumne þæt þē gemiltsīe. Gif þū ne finde nānne þe þē gemiltsian wille, wend þonne hider ongēan and genyhtsumīe ūnc bǣm mīne lȳtlan ǣhta, and far þē on fiscaþ mid mē. Þēah hwæðre ic myndgīe þē gif þū fultumiendum becymst tō þīnum ǣrran weorþmynte, þæt þū ne forgiete mīne þearfendlican gegierelan.”

Þā cwæþ Apollonius, “Gif ic þē ne geþence þonne mē bet biþ, ic wȳsce þæt ic eft forlidennesse gefare and þīnne gelīcan eft ne gemēte.”

Æfter þissum wordum hē ēode on þone weg þe him getǣht wæs, oþþæt hē becōm tō þǣre ceastre geate and þǣr inēode. Mid þȳ þe hē þōhte hwone hē biddan meahte līfes fultum, þā gesēah hē ānne nacodne cnapan geond þā strǣte iernan. Se wæs mid ele gesmerod and mid scȳtan begyrd and bær geongra menna plegan on handa; tō þǣm bæþstede belimpende, and clipode micelre stefne and cwæþ, “Gehīere gē ceasterwaran! Gehīere gē elþēodige, frīge and þēowe, æðele and unæðele! Se bæþstede is open!”

Þā þā Apollonius þæt gehīerde, hē hine unscrȳdde þǣm healfan sciccelse þe hē onhæfde, and ēode intō þǣm þwēale; and mid þȳ þe hē behēold heora ānra gehwilcne on heora weorce, hē sōhte his gelīcan, ac hē ne meahte hine þǣr findan on þǣm flocce. Þā fǣringa cōm Arcestrates ealre þǣre þēode cyning, mid micelre menige his menna, and inēode on þæt bæþ. Þā ongann se cyning plegan wiþ his gefēran mid þōðere; and Apollonius hine gemengde swā swā God wolde on þæs cyninges plegan, and iernende þone þōðor gelǣhte, and mid swiftre hrædnesse geslegene ongēan gesende tō þǣm plegendan cyninge. Eft hē ongēan āsende, hē hrædlīce slōg, swā he hine næfre feallan ne lēt. Se cyning þā oncnēow þæs geongan snelnesse þæt hē wiste þæt hē næfde his gelīcan on þǣm plegan. Þā cwæþ hē tō his gefēran, “Gāþ ēow heonon; þes cniht, þæs þe mē þyncþ, is mīn gelīca.”

Þā þā Apollonius gehīerde þæt se cyning hine herede, hē arn hrædlīce and genēalǣhte tō þǣm cyninge, and mid gelǣredre handa hē swang þone top mid swā micelre swiftnesse, þæt þǣm cyninge wæs geþūht swilce hē of ielde tō geoguðe gewend wǣre. And æfter þǣm on his cynesetle hē him gecwēmlīce þegnode, and þā þā hē ūt ēode of þǣm bæðe, hē hine lǣdde be þǣre handa, and him þā siþþan þanon gewende þæs weges þe hē ǣr cōm. Ða cwæþ se cyning tō his mennum, siþþan Apollonius āgān wæs, “Ic swerīe þurh þā gemǣnan hǣle þæt ic mē næfre bet ne baðode þonne ic dyde tōdæg; nāt ic þurh hwilces geonges mannes þēnunge.” Þā besēah hē hine tō ānum his manna and cwæþ, “Gā and gewite hwæt se geonga mann sīe þe mē tōdæg swā wel gehīersumode.”

Se mann þā ēode æfter Apollonio. Mid þȳ þe hē gesēah þæt hē wæs mid horigum sciccelse bewǣfed, þā wende hē ongēan tō þǣm cyninge and cwæþ, “Se geonga mann þe þū æfter āscodest is forliden mann.”

Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Þurh hwæt wāst þū þæt?”

Se mann him andswarode and cwæþ, “Þēah hē hit self forswigīe, his gegierela hine gesweotolaþ.”

Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Gā hrædlīce and sege him þæt se cyning bit þē þæt þū cume tō his gereorde.”

Þā Apollonius þæt gehīerde, he þǣm gehīersumode and ēode forþ mid þǣm menn, oþþæt hē becōm tō þæs cyninges healle. Þā ēode se mann in beforan tō þǣm cyninge and cwæþ, “Se forlidena mann is cumen þe þū æfter sendest, ac hē ne mæg for scame ingān būtan scrūde.” Þā hēt se cyning hine sōna gescrȳdan mid weorþfullan scrūde, and hēt hine ingān tō þǣm gereorde. Þā ēode Apollonius in, and gesæt þǣr him getǣht wæs, ongēan þone cyning. Þǣr wearþ þā sēo þēnung ingeboren, and æfter þǣm cynelice gebēorscipe, and Apollonius nān þing ne æt, þēah þe ealle ōðre menn ǣton and blīðe wǣron; ac hē behēold þæt gold and þæt seolfor and þā dēorwyrðan rēaf and þā bēodas and þā cynelican þēnunga.

Þā þā hē þis eall mid sārnesse behēold, þā sæt sum eald and sum ofēstig ealdormann be þǣm cyninge; mid þȳ þe hē gesēah þæt Apollonius swā sārlīce sæt, and ealle þing behēold, and nān þing ne æt, þā cwæþ hē tō þǣm cyninge, “Þū gōda cyning, efne þes mann þe þū swā wel wiþ gedēst, hē is swīðe ofēstful for þīnum gōde.”

Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Þē misþyncþ; sōþlīce þes geonga mann ne ofēstaþ on nānum þingum þe hē hēr gesīehþ, ac hē cȳð þæt hē hæfþ fela forloren.” Þā besēah Arcestrates se cyning blīðum andwlitan tō Apollonio and cwæþ, “Þū geonga mann, bēo blīðe mid ūs and gehyht on God, þæt þū mōte self tō þǣm sēlran becuman.”

Mid þȳ þe se cyning þās word gecwæþ, þā fǣringa þǣr ēode in þæs cyninges geonge dohtor, and cyste hire fæder and þā ymbsittendan. Þā hēo becōm tō Apollonio, þā gewende hēo ongēan tō hire fæder and cwæþ, “Þu gōda cyning and mīn se lēofesta fæder, hwæt is þes geonga mann, þe ongēan þē on swā weorþlicum setle sit, mid sārlicum andwlitan? Nāt ic hwæt hē besorgaþ.”

Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Lēofe dohtor, þes geonga mann is forliden, and hē gecwēmde mē menna betst on þǣm plegan, forþǣm ic hine gelaðode tō þissum ūrum gebēorscipe. Nāt ic hwæt hē is ne hwanon hē is; ac gif þū wille witan hwæt hē sīe, āsca hine, forþǣm þe gedafenaþ þæt þū wite.”

Þā ēode þæt mægden tō Apollonio, and mid forwandiendre sprǣce cwæþ, “Þēah þū stille sīe and unrōt, þēah ic þine æðelborennesse on þē gesēo. Nū þonne gif þē tō hefig ne þynce, sæge mē þīnne naman, and þīn gelimp ārecce mē.”

Þā cwæþ Apollonius, “Gif þū for nēode āscast æfter mīnum naman, ic secge þē, ic hine forlēas on sǣ. Gif þū wilt mīne æðelborennesse witan, wite þū þæt ic hīe forlēt on Tharsum.”

Þæt mægden cwæþ, “Sæge mē gewīslicor, þæt ic hit mæge understandan.” Apollonius þā sōþlīce hire āreahte ealle his gelimp, and æt þǣre sprǣce ende him fēollon tearas of þǣm ēagum.

Mid þȳ þe se cyning þæt gesēah, hē bewende hine þā tō þǣre dohtor and cwæþ, “Lēofe dohtor, þu gesyngodest, mid þȳ þe þū woldest witan his naman and his gelimp; þū hæfst nū geednīwod his ealde sār; ac ic bidde þē þæt þū giefe him swā hwæt swā þū wille.”

Þā þā þæt mægden gehīerde þæt hire wæs ālīefed fram hire fæder þæt hēo ǣr hire self gedōn wolde, þā cwæþ hēo tō Apollonio, “Apolloni, sōþlīce þū eart ūre; forlǣt þīne murcunge, and nū ic mīnes fæder lēafe hæbbe, ic gedō þē weligne.” Apollonius hire þæs þancode, and se cyning blissode on his dohtor welwillendnesse and hire tō cwæþ, “Lēofe dohtor, hāt feccan þīne hearpan, and gecȳþ þē tō þīnum frīend, and āfeorsa fram þǣm geongan his sārnesse.” Þā ēode hēo ūt and hēt feccan hire hearpan, and sōna swā hēo hearpian ongann, hēo mid wynsumum sange gemengde þǣre hearpan swēg. Þā ongunnon ealle þā men hīe herian on hire swēgcræft, and Apollonius āna swigode. Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Apolloni, nū þū dēst yfele, forþǣm þe ealle menn heriaþ mīne dohtor on hire swēgcræfte, and þu āna hīe swigende tǣlst.” Apollonius cwæþ, “Ēalā þū gōda cyning, gif þū mē gelīefst, ic secge þæt ic ongiete þæt sōþlīce þīn dohtor gefēoll on swēgcræft, ac hēo næfþ hine nā wel geleornod; ac hāt mē nu sellan þā hearpan, þonne wāst þū þæt þū nū giet nāst.” Arcestrates se cyning cwæþ, “Apolloni, ic oncnāwe sōþlīce þæt þū eart on eallum þingum wel gelǣred.” Þā hēt se cyning sellan Apollonīe þā hearpan. Apollonius þā ūt ēode and hine scrȳdde and sette ānne cynehelm uppan his hēafod and nām þā hearpan on his hand and inēode, and swā stōd þæt se cyning and ealle þā ymbsittendan wēndon þæt he nǣre Apollonius ac þæt hē wǣre Apollines þāra hǣðenra god. Þā wearþ stilnes and swīge geworden innan þǣre healle; and Apollonius his hearpenægel genam, and hē þā hearpestrengas mid cræfte āstyrian ongann, and þǣre hearpan swēg mid wynsumum sange gemengde. And se cyning self and ealle þe þǣr andwearde wǣron micelre stefne clipodon and hine heredon. Æfter þissum forlēt Apollonius þā hearpan and plegode and fela fægera þinga þǣr forþtēah, þe þǣm folce ungecnawen wæs and ungewunelic; and him eallum þearle līcode ǣlc þāra þinga þe hē forþtēah. Sōþlīce mid þȳ þe þæs cyninges dohtor gesēah þæt Apollonius on eallum gōdum cræftum swā wel wæs getogen, þā gefēoll hire mōd on his lufe. Þā æfter þæs bēorscipes geendunge, cwæþ þæt mægden tō þǣm cyninge, “Lēofa fæder, þū līefdest mē lȳtle ǣr þæt ic mōste giefan Apollonio swā hwæt swā ic wolde of þīnum goldhorde.” Arcestrates se cyning cwæþ tō hire, “Gief him swā hwæt swā þū wille.” Hēo þā swīðe blīðe ūtēode and cwæþ, “Lārēow Apolloni, ic giefe þē be mīnes fæder lēafe, twā hund punda goldes, and fēower hund punda gewihte seolfres, and þone mǣstan dǣl dēorweorðan rēafes, and twēntig þēowa manna.” And hēo þā þus cwæþ tō þǣm þēowum mannum, “Beraþ þās þing mid ēow þe ic behēt Apollonio mīnum lārēowe, and lecgaþ innan būre, beforan mīnum frīendum.” Þis wearþ þā þus gedōn, æfter þǣre cwēne hǣse, and ealle þā menn hire gife heredon þe hīe gesawon. Þā sōþlīce geendode se gebēorscipe, and þā menn ealle ārison, and grēton þone cyning and þā cwēne, and bǣdon hīe gesunde bēon, and hām gewendon. Ēac swilce Apollonius cwæþ, “Þū gōda cyning and earmra gemiltsiend, and þū cwēn lāre lufiend, bēon gē gesunde.” Hē besēah ēac tō þǣm þēowum mannum þe þæt mægden him forgiefen hæfde, and him cwæþ tō, “Nīmaþ þas þing mid ēow þe mē sēo cwēn forgēaf, and gān wē sēcan ūre giesthūs þæt wē magon ūs gerestan.” Þā ādrēd þæt mægden þæt hēo næfre eft Apollonium ne gesawe swā hraðe swā hēo wolde, and ēode þā tō hire fæder and cwæþ, “Þū gōda cyning, līcaþ þē wel þæt Apollonius þe þurh ūs tōdæg gegōdod is, þus heonon fare, and cuman yfele menn and berēafian hine?” Se cyning cwæþ, “Wel þū cwǣde. Hāt him findan hwǣr hē hine mæge weorþlīcost gerestan.” Þā dyde þæt mægden swā hire beboden wæs, and Apollonius onfeng þǣre wununge þe him betǣht wæs and þǣr inēode, Gode þanciende þe him ne forwiernde cynelices weorþscipes and frōfre. Ac þæt mægden hæfde unstille niht, mid þǣre lufe onǣled þāra worda and sanga þe hēo gehīerde æt Apollonīe; and nā leng hēo ne gebād þonne hit dæg wæs, ac ēode sōna swā hit lēoht wæs, and gesæt beforan hire fæder bedde. Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Lēofe dohtor, for hwȳ eart þū þus ǣrwacol?” Þæt mægden cwæþ, “Mē aweahton þā gecneordnessa þe ic giestrandæg gehīerde. Nū bidde ic þē forþǣm, þæt þū befæste mē ūrum cuman Apollonīe tō lāre.” Þā wearþ se cyning þearle geblissod and hēt feccan Apollonium and him tō cwæþ, “Mīn dohtor giernþ þæt hēo mōte leornian æt þē þā gesǣligan lāre þe þū canst; and gif þū wilt þissum þingum gehīersum bēon, ic swerīe þē þurh mīnes rīces mægena, þæt swā hwæt swā þū on sǣ forlure, ic þē þæt on lande gestaðolīe.” Þā þā Apollonius þæt gehīerde, hē onfēng þǣm mægdene tō lāre, and hire tǣhte swā wel swā hē self geleornode. Hit gelamp þā æfter þissum, binnan fēawum tīdum, þæt Arcestrates se cyning hēold Apollonius hand on handa, and ēodon swā ūt on þǣre ceastre strǣte. Þā æt nīehstan comon þǣr gān ongēan hīe þrīe gelǣrede weras and æðelborene, þā lange ǣr gierndon þæs cyninges dohtor; hīe þā ealle þrīe tōgædere ānre stefne grētton þone cyning. Þā smearcode se cyning and him tō besēah and þus cwæþ, “Hwæt is þæt þæt gē mē ānre stefne grētton?” Þā andswarode heora ān and cwæþ, “We bǣdon gefyrn þīnre dohtor, and þū ūs oft hrædlīce mid elcunge geswenctest; forþǣm wē cōmon hider tōdæg þus tōgædere. Wē sindon þīne ceastergewaran, of æðelum gebyrdum geborene; nū bidde wē þē þæt þū gecēose þē ānne of ūs þrim, hwilcne þū wille þē tō āðme habban.” Þā cwæþ se cyning, “Nabbe gē nā gōdne tīman āredodne; mīn dohtor is nū swīðe bisig ymbe hire leornunge; ac þȳ lǣs þe ic ēow ā leng slæcce, āwrītaþ ēowre naman on gewrite, and hire morgengife; þonne āsende ic þā gewritu mīnre dohtor, þæt hēo self gecēose hwilcne ēower hēo wille.” Þā dydon þā cnihtas swā, and se cyning nām þā gewritu and geinseglode hīe mid his hringe and sealde Apollonio þus cweðende, “Nim nū lārēow Apolloni, swā hit þē ne mislīcīe, and bring þīnum lǣringmǣdene.” Þā nām Apollonius þā gewritu and ēode tō þǣre cynelican healle. Mid þǣm þe þæt mægden gesēah Apollonium, þā cwæþ hēo, “Lārēow, hwȳ gǣst þū āna?” Apollonius cwæþ, “Hlǣfdige, nim þās gewritu þe þīn fæder þē sende and rǣd.” Þæt mægden nam and rǣdde þāra þrēora cnihta naman ac hēo ne funde nā þone naman þǣron þe hēo wolde. Þā hēo þā gewritu oferrǣd hæfde, þā besēah hēo tō Apollonio and cwæþ, “Lārēow, ne ofþyncþ hit þē gif ic þus wer gecēose?” Apollonius cwæþ, “Nā, ac ic blissīe swīðor þæt þū meaht þurh þā lāre, þe þū æt mē underfēnge, þē self on gewrite gecȳðan hwilcne heora þū wille; mīn willa is þæt þū þē wer gecēose þǣr þū self wille.” Þæt mægden cwæþ, “Ēalā lārēow, gif þū mē lufodest þū hit besorgodest!” Æfter þissum wordum hēo mid mōdes ānrǣdnesse āwrāt ōðer gewrit and þæt geinseglode and sealde Apollonio. Apollonius hit þā ūt bær on þā strǣte and sealde þǣm cyninge. Þæt gewrit wæs þus gewriten: ‘Þū gōda cyning and mīn se lēofesta fæder, nu þīn mildheortnes mē lēafe sealde þæt ic self mōste cēosan hwilcne wer ic wolde, ic secge þē tō sōðe þone forlidenan mann ic wille; and gif þū wundrīe þæt swā scamfæst fæmne swā unforwandigendlīce þās word āwrāt, þonne wite þū þæt ic hæbbe þurh weax āboden, þe nāne scame ne cann, þæt ic self þē for scame secgan ne meahte.’ Þā þā se cyning hæfde þæt gewrit oferrǣden, þā niste hē hwilcne forlidenne hēo nemde. Besēah þā tō þǣm þrim cnihtum and cwæþ, “Hwilc ēower is forliden?” Þā cwæþ heora ān, se hātte Ardalius, “Ic eom forliden.” Se ōðer him andwyrde and cwæþ, “Swīga þū! Ādl þē fornime þæt þū ne bēo hāl ne gesund! Mid mē þū bōccræft leornodest, and þū næfre būtan þǣre ceastre geate fram mē ne cōme. Hwǣr gefōre þū forlidennesse?” Mid þȳ þe se cyning ne meahte findan hwilc heora forliden wǣre, hē besēah tō Apollonio and cwæþ, “Nim þū Apolloni þis gewrit and rǣd hit; ēaðe mæg geweorðan þæt þū wite þæt ic nāt, þū þe þǣr andweard wǣre.” Þā nām Apollonius þæt gewrit and rǣdde, and sōna swā hē ongēat þæt hē gelufod wæs fram þǣm mægdene, his andwlita eall ārēodode. Þā se cyning þæt gesēah, þā nam hē Apollonies hand, and hine hwōn fram þǣm cnihtum gewende and cwæþ, “Wāst þū þone forlidenan mann?” Apollonius cwæþ, “Þū gōda cyning, gif þīn willa biþ, ic hine wāt.” Þā gesēah se cyning þæt Apollonius mid rōsan rude wæs eall oferbrǣded, þā ongēat hē þone cwide and þus cwæþ tō him, “Blissa blissa, Apolloni, forþǣm þe mīn dohtor gewilnaþ þæs þe mīn willa is. Ne mæg sōþlīce on þyllicum þingum nān þing geweorðan būtan Godes willan.” Arcestrates besēah tō þǣm þrim cnihtum and cwæþ, “Sōþ is þæt ic eow ǣr sægde, þæt gē ne cōmon on gedafenlicre tīde mīnre dohtor tō biddenne; ac þonne hēo mæg hīe fram hire lāre geǣmtian þonne sende ic eow word.” Þā gewendon hīe hām mid þissere andsware; and Arcestrates se cyning hēold forþǣm Apollonius hand and hine lǣdde hām mid him, nā swilce hē cuma wǣre ac swilce hē his āðum wǣre. Þā æt nīestan forlēt se cyning Apollonius hand, and ēode āna into þǣm būre þǣr his dohtor inne wæs and þus cwæþ, “Lēofe dohtor, hwǣm hæfst þū þē gecoren tō gemæccan?” Þæt mægden þā fēoll tō hire fæder fōtum and cwæþ, “Þū ārfæsta fæder, gehīer þīnre dohtor willan: ic lufīe þone forlidenan mann þe wæs þurh ungelimp beswicen; ac þȳ lǣs þe þē twēonīe þǣre spræce, Apollonium ic wille, mīnne lārēow; and gif þū mē him ne selst, þū forlǣtst þīne dohtor.” Se cyning þā sōþlīce ne meahte ārǣfian his dohtor tēaras, ac ārǣrde hīe ūp and hire tō cwæþ, “Lēofe dohtor, ne ondrǣd þū þē ǣniges þinges; þū hæfst gecoren þone wer þe mē wel līcaþ.” Ēode þā ūt and besēah tō Apollonio and cwæþ, “Lārēow Apolloni, ic smēade mīnre dohtor mōdes willan, þā āreahte hēo mē mid wōpe betwux ōðre sprǣce, þās þing þus cweðende, ‘Þū geswōre Apollonio, gif hē wolde gehīersumian mīnum willan on lāre, þæt þū woldest him geinnian swā hwæt swā sēo sǣ him ætbrægd. Nū forþǣm þe hē gehīersum wæs þīnre hǣse and mīnum willan1 þonne ic wilnīe þæt þū forgiefe him mēde, mid þȳ þe þū mē him selle tō gemæccan.’” Þā þȳ æftran dæge hēt sandas þǣm ymbsittendum ceastrum þā æðelborene gelaðian. Mid þȳ þe hīe becōmon, þā cwæþ hē, “Mīna hlāfordas, mīn dohtor wolde hire þone lārēow tō gemæccan; sōþlīce ic wilnīe ēow blissian, forþǣm þe mīn cild sīe sinhīwod tō wītan.” Þis cweðende, þā gesette hē þæt fæce heora brȳdgifta. Nū gelamp hit, þā þā hēo wearþ mid bearne, þā ēode hēo mid hire gemæccan Apollonio þǣm æðelinge be þǣm strande. And þonne on ancre rād fæger scip feorr, þā gesēah se ōðer þæt hit wæs his āgenes þēodes. Ic sēce hine; and hwonne þū hine gesēo, þā bid him blissian. Antiochus se cyning wæs mid heofonfȳre tōblāwen, and his dohtor samod. Þā hneslīce hē clypede hīe, and wēop hlūde on blisse. Þā cwæþ hē, “Mīn betste and ǣnlice cild, healf mīn āgenan sāwle! Ne sceal ic forþfēran æt þīn forlǣtennesse. Ic gefand þē, and wille libban.” On hebbendran stefne hē cwæþ, “Iernaþ hider mīna þēowa menn, mīna frīend! Ēower eall, mīn earfoðnes is on ende. Ic gefand þæt þe ic forlēt; mīn cild, mīn ǣnlice dohtor!” Þa hīerdon þā þēowa menn his blissig word and oncōmon, and ēac cōm Athanagoras se ealdorman. And hīe onfand þone gesǣligne cyning wēpan on his dohtor hneccan. Þā cwæþ hē, “Sēo, sēo! Þēos is hēo þe ic gehēofed. Healf mīne sāwle! forþǣm nū ic libbe.” Mid þǣm þe hīe ealle wēopon samod mid heora hlāfordes gesǣlðe. Þā nū ongierede Apollonius hine of his hēofungclāðe, and gescrydde hine on cynelicum rēafum. Þā his gefēran cwǣdon, “Mīna hlāford, hū micel hæfþ þīn dohtor þīne onlīcnesse! Þā cwæþ hēo, “Gebletsod bēo God, hwā mē gehæfde swilce ēaþmōdnesse, and hwā forgēaf mē mid þē tō sēonne, and tō libbenne, and tō forþfērenne samod.” Þā hēo reahte him eallu þā gelimp, and sægde þæs þe hēo geþolode mid þǣm ungesǣligum Lenonem, and hū Dryhten Ælmihtig hīe bewerode. Þā Athanagoras ondrēd þæt ōðer meahte biddan hīe tō gemæccan, and þus wēorp hē hine tō þæs cyninges fōtum, and gemetfæstlīce ācȳðde hū mid him heora gesǣlig edryne gelamp, and gebæd hine him forgiefan his cild. Þā Apollonius andswarode, “Ne mæg ic þæs oþsacan, forþǣm þe þū ālīhtde hire sār, and geedstaðelode nū and sīþ mīne blisse.” Sōna Athanagoras gecierde þǣre ceastre, and ābēonn ūt þā ceasterwaru, þus cweðende, “Ne lǣte ūre ceastre forfeallan for þæs suman fracoðan scandes scyldum. Ic wāt þæt Apollonius se cyning gecōm, þǣre fægeran Thasian fæder. Hwæt behealdaþ gē þǣr þǣr his flotan on ancre rīdaþ. Þā Apollonius, þe on cynelicum rēafum gescrȳded wæs, se wæs bescoren and gecynehelmod, þā āstāg þone dōmsetl and his dohtor. Þǣr sēo ceasterwaru ymbstōd, tō his gespræces hyhte. Þā cwæþ hē, “Gehieraþ gē Machilenan Menn, on þissum dæge hæbbe ic mīn dohtor gefunden, hwǣm se yfel Leno wolde ārlēas gefremman. Ne meahte nā earmung nā gebed nā gold hine oflinnan his wælhrēownesse. Þā Thasia cwæþ þǣm wīfa ealdormenn tō, “Þē ic āhredde nū, forþǣm þe ic eom gīet unbesmiten fram þīnum miltse and þǣre ceasterware miltse. Ēac ic forgiefe þē tū hund punda goldes.” Þā bewand hēo þā ōðeran wīf, þā þe Leno him gehæfde, and cwæþ hēo him tō, “Bēoþ gē frēo, and forgietaþ gē þīn gēogebǣru.” Þā Apollonius ācȳðde ongēan þā ceasterwaru and dyde him þanc forþǣm þe hīe his willan fullēodon, and forgēaf him mēde fīf hund punda goldes. Hwǣr is mīn dohtor?” Hē bewende hine þā tō Thasian and cwæþ, “Þis hēo is.” And hīe wēopon þā ealle and ēac blissodon. And þæt word sprang geond eall þæt land þæt Apollonius se mǣra cyning hæfde funden his wīf; and þǣr wearþ ormǣte bliss, and þā organa wǣron getogene, and þā bīeman geblawene; and þǣr wearþ blīðe gebēorscipe gegearwod betwux þǣm cyninge and þǣm folce; and hēo gesette hire gingran þe hire folgode tō sācerde; and mid blisse and hēofe ealre þǣre mægðe on Efesum, hēo fōr mid hire were and mid hire āðume and mid hire dohtor tō Antiochian, þǣr Apollonio wæs þæt cynerīce gehealden. Þā hēt Thasia beforan gelǣdan Theophilum Dionisiades gerēfan and him tō cwæþ, “Theophile, tō þǣm þæt þū þē gebeorge, sege hlūddre stefne, hwā þē hēte mē ofslēan.” Se gerēfa cwæþ¸ “Dionisia mīn hlǣfdige.” Hwæt sēo burgwaru þā gelæhton Stranguilionem and his wīf and lǣddon ūt on þā ceastre and ofstǣndon hīe tō dēaðe! And woldon ēac Theophilum ofslēan, ac Thasia him þingode and cwæþ, “Būtan þes mann mē þonne first forgēafe þæt ic mē tō Gode gebǣde, þonne ne becōme ic tō þissere āre.” Hēo reahte þā sōþlīce hire handa him tō and hēt hine gesund faran, and Philothemian þāre forscyldigodena dohtor Thasia nām tō hire.
